The Mills of Mashamshire

In the summer of 2014 the Masham Sheep Fair Committee asked MoM to produce a small exhibition on the history of mills in the area. This was to link with the Flower Festival in the church on the theme of Power and Light.
A fascinating story began to emerge that stretched back to the very earliest settlement of our present town and villages. It passed through the cloth and tithe milling of the middle ages as well as the industrialised milling of the nineteenth century with our local Flax Mill. Thanks to our water mill we were able to electrify the town far ahead of other areas, which ensured our independence as a local authority in our own right. The story was picked up and continues to this day through the feed mills which provide employment to the area.
I'Anson's provided funding to produce 3 banner exhibits which can be read here.
The banners have been used at several recent town events and continue to be well read and appreciated. As a result we will be producing a booklet of the exhibition in 2015.
